This dataset contains 340 authentic academic essays written by university undergraduates, randomly selected from the CELL (Chinese and English Learner Language) Corpus. All essays are produced by human writers and are classified as ESL (English as a Second Language) texts. The total word count is 263,329 words, with essays distributed across word buckets of 400, 800, and 1,200 words.

The essays span a wide range of domains including Business, Education, Humanities, Psychology, and STEM, and represent 18 distinct majors such as Biology, Computer Science, Economics, and Psychology. The CELL Corpus itself is a specialized collection designed for research in corpus linguistics and second language acquisition, featuring over 4.2 million English words and demographic metadata of student writers. This subset provides a focused resource for analyzing vocabulary use, frequency, and complexity in learner language.
